© Semantic Automation from Screen Capture Omer Barkol, Ruth Bergman, Ayelet Pnueli, Sagi Schein HP Laboratories HPL-2009-161 Automation technology, Image analysis, Visual parsing IT organizations want efficiency and are constantly attempting to reduce or eliminate manual work. Automation technology facilitates the transition from manual to automatic. However, until now, automation technology has been applied in limited settings in IT organizations. For example, automated software testing uses automation technology, but only about 5-10% of software testing is automatic. One of the reasons automation technology is not more widely adopted, is that there is a very high barrier to using it. The objects and constructs used for today's automation originate from the underlying application or computing environment, so that using automation technology is as complex as programming. We propose a new automation technology for applications with Graphical User Interfaces (GUI). Unlike existing automation technology, which uses the objects defined by the technology that was used to build the GUI, the technology we propose uses screen capture. The system described in this paper infers GUI semantics from screen images. The system is modelled after the notion of compilers for programming languages. It has a structural analysis module, which corresponds to the lexical analyzer (Lex), and a semantic analysis module, which corresponds to the parser (Yacc). Structural analysis uses image analysis techniques including segmentation and object recognition, and semantic analysis uses graph grammars and visual parsing. Using Unity to Semi-Automatically Integrate Relational Schema

Unity is an architecture for integrating relational databases that performs three processes: metadata capture, semantic integration, and query formulation and execution. The foundation of the architecture is a naming methodology that allows concepts to be integrated across systems. Semantic naming of schema constructs increases automation during integration and provides users with physical and ...

Ontologies and Reasoning to Capture Product Complexity in Automation Industry

The variety of components and the complexity of technical solutions in factory automation push information management based on relational databases to it’s limits in terms of maintenance complexity and usage flexibility. Semantic Technologies account for maintainable, comprehensible and rich schema descriptions as well as state-of-the-art reasoning and SPARQL engines claim to deliver compelling...

A Joint Semantic Vector Representation Model for Text Clustering and Classification

Text clustering and classification are two main tasks of text mining. Feature selection plays the key role in the quality of the clustering and classification results. Although word-based features such as term frequency-inverse document frequency (TF-IDF) vectors have been widely used in different applications, their shortcoming in capturing semantic concepts of text motivated researches to use...

Exploitation of Semantic Web Technology in ERP Systems

Until recently existing technologies enabling the integration of enterprise systems, use very few of the capabilities of modern research. For example, the activity of finding services, which should deliver expected enterprise functionality, has to be driven by humans. The process of assembling pieces of functionality into complex business processes also involves human interaction. The semantic ...

Content-Aware Retargeting For Soccer Video Adaptation

A content-aware retargeting method is proposed for adapting soccer video to heterogeneous terminals. According to domain-specific knowledge, ball, player and player’s face are defined as user interested objects (UIOs) in different view-types. The UIOs are extracted by semantic analysis on soccer video, and then a region of interest (ROI) of each shot is determined jointly by three factors: term...
